Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati and he is the brother of Karthikeyan. He was created by his mother using earth which she moulded into the shape of the boy. Ganpati is also known as "Vighnaharata". Hence he is worshipped first so that he may destroy any upcoming obstacles in the task taken.
The Ganesha's mantra :: remove obstacles from your life .
